Olympic-Class GNSS:
Mapping Skeleton Sled Tracks

by David Baker, Alan Dodson, and Terry Moore
Two of the greatest challenges for satellite positioning are poor skyview environment and high antenna dynamics. A team of researchers tackled both to create a 3-D map of a high-speed ice-sledding track. The task required them to use a hybrid GPS-Glonass receiver and to develop dedicated software.

Galileo and Security
by Pascal Campagne
In recent months, Galileo’s proposed frequency plan and prospective exploitation for military operations have increased awareness of security concerns related to the system. This article explores the issues and describes the steps being taken by Galileo’s sponsors to reduce risks of hostile use or interference with the system’s operation.

Navigating the City:
GNSS Assists Vehicle and Pedestrian Systems

by Jussi Collin and Jani Käppi
The wave of the future, personal navigation with handheld devices, will require much lower power consumption than GNSS receivers currently offer. Researchers in Finland developed a system running on inertial sensors alone for as long as possible, using GNSS only to initialise and periodically restore accurate position.
