Quo Vadis Galileo?

The keynote presentation at the European Navigation Conference, May 2002.
Galileo and Security

Galileo design and development includes consideration of security concerns, as the system may be subject to attempts to threaten its safe use. The European Union and European Space Agency have established Galileo security boards to address these issues.
Vive Galileo!
Meeting in Brussels on Tuesday, March 26, the EU transport ministers released 450 million Euros in development funding for the Galileo programme. The European Space Agency had already committed a similar amount. The total project cost for development and deployment is forecast to reach 3.4 billion Euros, with a 2008 operational date.

At a summit meeting earlier this month, EU heads of state endorsed Galileo and called on the transport ministers' council to approve it. They also insisted that more private investors be involved to help cover the costs.

Private companies in Europe have lobbied hard for the program, but so far have not committed specific monetary amounts.

Tuesday's agreement by the transport ministers calls for setting up a joint undertaking between the public and private sectors to handle the development phase, with private company participation after 2003.

Europe Needs Galileo
On the eve of Europe’s decision to launch the Galileo programme, 38 European industry leaders stress the vital importance of this infrastructure programme for the development of key high technology markets and the creation of more than 100,000 jobs.
German Backing, EU Heads of State Boost Galileo Chances
Prospects for the proposed Galileo system improved considerably with events in late February and mid-March.
A World of Difference

The GNSS world of the future will offer greater accuracy, greater availability, greater robustness -- but a world with Galileo in it would make these things happen faster and with greater scope and depth.

Galileo would also bring new, distinctive features to build out markets larger than could GPS alone.

A Step by Step Approach for Galileo

Is there a business case for Galileo? Is Galileo technically feasible? What are the merits of a single point of contact for implementing the programme?
Galileo: Friend or Foe?

A presentation given to the Interagency GPS Executive Board on February 28, 2002.
Galileo: Near Death, In Trouble, or Healthy and On-Track?

What is the situation with Galileo? What factors or issues have produced opposing views of the importance and future of the Galileo programme? Why do we have this controversy? An objective view plus a personal perspective on recent European and U.S. events affecting the Galileo programme, and an estimate of its future direction.
Give the Users What They Want

Providing a Position, Velocity and Time (PVT) service via a seamless global architecture, using the latest in satellite navigation systems technology, forms the basis of the GNSS concept.
