ABOUT GALILEO'S
WORLD
Mission Statement
Galileo's World, a publication
of Advanstar Communications launched in November 1999, describes
the development and use of the proposed European contribution to
a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). That system is known
as Galileo and also incorporates the European Geostationary Navigation
Satellite Service (EGNOS), an augmentation system sometimes referred
to as GNSS-1.
Galileo's World provides
a high-quality magazine that can raise public awareness of and support
for GNSS and the opportunity it offers manufacturers and service
providers to bring new and improved solutions profitably to the
marketplace, as well as the benefits awaiting a wide variety of
professional, scientific, and commercial end users.
Advanstar Communications, an international
publishing company with offices in the United Kingdom, France, and
Germany, as well as the United States, Latin America, and Asia,
produces more than 100 publications and 100 conferences throughout
the world.
The company has more than 10 years
of experience in chronicling the news and applications of the Global
Positioning System and Russia's GLONASS system in the highly regarded
GPS World, the first and only monthly journal exclusively
covering GNSS technology. Advanstar has launched successful, widely
read journals addressing related applications in geographic information
systems and intelligent transport systems.
Advanstar editors and publishers
have participated in six of the annual GNSS conferences (and predecessor
meetings) held during the past eight years, as well as numerous
other specialty events in Europe. During this time, the company
has reported extensively on the evolution of GNSS both in GPS
World and the company's biweekly GPS World Newsletter.
Indeed, no other publishing company has provided as sustained and
detailed a coverage of GNSS. Glen Gibbons, founding editor of GPS
World and currently group editorial director for Advanstar's
geospatial business, will oversee the operation of Galileo's
World.
Editorial Content
During the system definition phase
of Galileo (through December 2000), editorial content will emphasize
reportage on system design alternatives, market research, user requirements,
funding and revenue-recovery strategies, results of trials and demonstration
tests of related systems (such as the European Geostationary Navigation
Overlay Service, or EGNOS), and technical studies completed and
under way. Other articles will clarify the structure, membership,
and deliberations of leading institutions involved in creating Galileo,
particularly the European Commission (EC) and European Space Agency
(ESA).
Articles written by end users will
also describe European applications of existing satellite-based
and terrestrial systems, including GPS, GLONASS, and Loran-C. As
the Galileo moves into the implementation and operational phases,
the content will shift in the direction of system development and
applications.
"Understanding Galileo," a column
similar to GPS World's "Innovation," will discuss systemwide technology
issues, such as orbits, signal structure, timing and geodetic coordinate
systems, and so forth. Prof. Dr. Bernhard Hofmann-Wellenhof, of
the Technical University Graz Institute of Applied Geodesy's Department
of Positioning & Navigation in Graz, Austria, will serve as
coordinating editor of the column. In addition to an impressive
academic and research career, Prof.Dr. Hofmann-Wellenhof is co-author
of the well-regarded texts, GPS Theory and Practice, now in its
fifth edition published by Springer.
Circulation
Galileo's World is circulated
free of charge to 15,000 qualified subscribers, primarily in Europe,
a number that is expected to grow quickly over time. Readers include
decision makers and influential participants in the Galileo planning
process at ESA, Eurocontrol (European air traffic control organization),
EC (including directorates for transport, space, R&D, and international
relations), the European GNSS Office, national space agencies, and
leaders of national governmental bodies involved in or affected
by GNSS activities.
Readers will also be drawn from
a broad set of commercial user communities, particularly land transport,
civil aviation, and maritime navigation/vessel tracking, but also
incorporating readers involved in mapping, surveying, and civil
engineering as well as other users of geospatial data and the European
timing/synchronization community. Among the industrial and manufacturing
sectors, Galileo's World will reach prospective participants
in building the infrastructure in space and on the ground, developers
and integrators of end-user products and systems, and managers of
new business development employing GNSS products and services. Independent
consultants, academics, and others with technical expertise in satellite
navigation, positioning, and timing will also have the opportunity
to qualify for subscriptions to the magazine.
Editorial Advisors
An Editorial Advisory Council (EAC) is being
assembled for Galileo's World that draws on leading figures from among both the
sponsoring institutions and the most important user communities.
Current EAC members include:
Prof. Vidal Ashkenazi, chief executive for Nottingham Scientific
Ltd.; Pascal Campagne, France Developpement Conseil (FDC), France;
Olivier Carel, French Institute of Navigation; Ismael Colomina,
Institute of Geomatics, Spain; Dr. Jordi Corbera, Spanish Institute
of Navigation, Spain; Prof. Borje Forssell, Norwegian University
of Science and Technology; Adolfo Gambardella, Italian Institute
of Navigation,; Prof. Alain Geiger, ETH Institute of Geodesy and
Photogrammetry, and president of the Swiss Institute of Navigation;
Joerg Hahn, European Space Agency, Paul Kompfner, ERTICO (European
road telematics consortium), Belgium; Dr. Guenter Hein, University
FAF, Institute of Geodesy and Navigation, Germany; Ulrich Klinge,
the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse
Authorities (IALA); Dr. Wolfgang Lechner, EAC chairman, Telematica,
Germany; Pietro Lo Galbo, European Space Agency, The Netherlands;
Dr. Terry Moore, Nottingham University Institute of Engineering
Surveying and Space Geodesy, United Kingdom; Giorgio Solari, European
Space Agency, The Netherlands. Jac Spaans, European Group of Institutes
of Navigation (EUROGI), The Netherlands
We are adding other representatives from EC,
ESA, Eurocontrol, national space agencies and institutes of navigation, leaders
of trans- European and national industry associations and professional organizations,
and independent consultants. The EAC will provide counsel to the publication's
editorial staff, suggesting appropriate topics and authors for articles, and identifying
key events, audiences, activities, trends, and opportunities. As necessary, they
may be invited to review prospective manuscripts, offer their own commentaries
for readers, and promote the magazine by representing it within their own professional
associations.
